Advanced Coating Techniques

Create traffic markers, floor graphics, patterns and more using the same UCoat It materials with a little planning and patience. Many of these techniques are documented on our Show Floor creation page.

Masking & Striping

Masking areas on a UCoat It floor is not much different that masking a wall or car for a typical paint job. "Surface graphics" are typically applied on top of your UCoat base, then sealed with a coat of UGloss-AF clear to soften any hard edges left by the masking. Always use a chemical resistant, professional quality low-to-medium tack masking tape. Since most floors are not perfectly smooth, it is important to carefully press the tape as flat as possible to avoid any bleeding. Remove the tape as soon as possible, within 20 minutes of coating for best results. When masking over UGloss-AF, it is recommended the undercoat be allowed to cure for 24 hours before applying the mask, otherwise residue from the tape may stick to the fresh UGloss-AF.

Logos and Vinyl Graphics

Typically applied under a final UGloss-AF clear topcoat, logos may be "painted" into the floor using UCoat It materials of contrasting color or a high-quality, two-part urethane automotive paint. Vinyl graphics are another alternative. When using vinyl it is important to use a high-quality, UV and chemical resistant material typically used for outdoor signs. Printed or metallic finish vinyls may be used provided they are finished with a chemical resistant laminate. Your local sign shop should be able to help you select the best material. Let you sign shop know you will be using a solvent-based (Xylene) clear coat over the material. Always test any material prior to application to ensure compatibility with UCoat It floor coatings.

Checkered Flag Pattern Floors

Creating a checkered flag pattern floor with UCoat It takes some time a patience, but it has become one of our more popular finish styles. A typical application begins with a solid UCoat white base with UGloss-AF White topcoat. The area is measured and masking tape is applied. UCoat black is used in two coats for the squares, and the entire floor is sealed with UGloss-AF clear. Complete instructions are available here.
