UCoat It Now Offers Floor Coatings with New Antimicrobial Additive

UCoat It's new (-AM) Series coatings are ideal for floors where sanitary conditions are a concern.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. (Aug. 1, 2009) – UCoat It America LLC, a leading provider of commercial-grade epoxy floor coating systems for consumer and trade markets, now offers floor coatings with an antimicrobial additive. The additive is a compound that is integrated directly into the product during the manufacturing process which chemically elminiates micro-organisms, enabling the coating to resist mildew growth extending the life of concrete and wood surfaces while also inhibiting offensive odors.

"We introduced the antimicrobial component to our product line last year," said Jerry Carafelly, Technical Director for UCoat It America. "The use of this chemistry in plastics for children's toys and accessories prompted us to investigate similar benefits for floor coatings as early as 2004. A significant feature of UCoat It floor coating systems is their ability to resist penetration of moisture into the substrate. We see a huge opportunity in the application of floor coatings as waterproofing for cement and wood substrates. Mold that generates mildew and odors when water is left standing on coated floors, cannot be sustained on these anti-microbial-treated surfaces."

The additive's chemical technology helps make maintaining a clean, sanitary environment more manageable, and its benefits will last indefinitely with proper care and maintenance.

UCoat It tested products with a blend of EPA registered biocides (EPA Reg. No. 10445-103 and 1706-196) for which 10445-103 has FDA approval under CFR 176.170, 176.180, and 176.300. Accordingly, our newly developed product line may be beneficial on any industry that requires a coating film to prevent micro-organisms from degrading the product.

The antimicrobial additive, which is indicated by the suffix "-AM" is available on all UCoat It finishing products, the most common of which are UCoat® (UCoat®-AM) commercial-grade epoxy, UGloss® (UGloss®-AM) non-automotive high-gloss urethane top coat, UGloss®-AF (UGloss-AF®-AM) automotive, high-gloss urethane top coat, and UClad® high-build, self-leveling epoxy coating.

As part of routine building maintenance, areas should be inspected for visible mold and the conditions causing the mold should be corrected to prevent mold from growing.
